How do we talk about issues that matter?

Talking about issues that matter is imperative for a holistic approach to learning. There is no way to avoid these sensitive or potentially uncomfortable conversations. I think as teachers modeling what it looks like to be honest and open-minded is the first step. No one is going to be vulnerable in a space that is perceived as judgmental. For young minds to learn how to think objectively and be able to have a discourse around things that are sensitive helps them learn to listen to other opinions and perspectives. I believe if there is a space that is safe where curiosity is promoted then it becomes easier to address those tougher topics. I also think that curiosity is a neutral way to open up the conversation. I'm curious what are your thoughts? I'm curious why you think that about this? This helps students start to reflect on their own belief systems and values.

If teachers can create an environment of respectful discourse and step in if things get out of hand there is an amazing learning opportunity for students. I personally loved the idea of a fishbowl conversation. With two circles, the inner circle speaks their opinions while the outer circle observes. This allows students to practice having conversations and observing others if they are not ready to speak. The outer circle can tap in at anytime and switch with one of their peers. The reason I like this is because students are building relationships with each other. For students who might be anxious to share their opinions they can see their peers getting vulnerable and being brave which creates that safe place for them to share their thoughts.

Regardless of how it is done we need to practice teaching how to have these conversations. Starting with creating an environment that is free of judgement, that values other people's opinions, and shows that everyone is allowed an opinion is important to have these types of conversations. To ignore issues that matter is to ignore someone's experiences. The acknowledgment of issues that matter and encouragement to talk about these things creates students who can think for themselves as adults, and are able to listen to each side of an argument to form a stronger opinion.
